Though small, Mendocino County is known for producing
world-class Wines , a tradition started more than 100 years ago. Its first
winery was established in 1879 by Louis Finne, near what today is Hopland.
Today , nearly 30 wineries are found in the area. The region produces an
abundance of award winning vintages and the business is the largest non-manufacturing
industry in the county. The county’s
wine regions are divided into six valley areas, each noted for the different
varieties of grapes that are produced under slightly different climatic conditions.
These areas are:
Sanel & McDowell Valley: These valleys are found
where Hwy 101 enters Mendocino County from the south and then along Highway
175 toward Lake County.
Ukiah Valley: This valley lies further
north along Hwy 101 and it was here that the county’s grape growing
began. Today it is where some of the largest and oldest vintners make their
home.
Redwood & Potter Valleys: These valleys
are the northern frontier for commercial grape growing in California, and
lie further north along Hwy 101 and along Hwy 20.
Anderson Valley: This valley is located
between Hwy 101 and the Mendocino Coast on Hwy 128 and is some of the most
beautiful countryside in the state.
