The iconic Skunk Train - a Northern California favorite for over a century--has introduced four unforgettable experiences departing from Willits:

The Highball Express , The Railcoaster - launching May 16, The Noyo Presidential Class Experience - launching early summer, and The Skunk Train x Flynn Creek Circus running September 11-27, 2026; tickets available beginning April 1.

Whether you are looking for a relaxed evening with cocktails or a hands-on adventure through the forest, this is the kind of outing that turns a simple trip into something memorable.

The Highball Express is an adults-only experience designed for unwinding. As the train winds through towering Redwoods, you'll sip cocktails, take in the views and settle into the rhythm of the rails.

Midway through the journey, the train stops deep in the forest--where fire pits glow, conversations linger, and the night slows down even more.

Railcoasters: A Fresh Way to Explore the Forest

This railbike experience is unlike any other. The route delivers a roller coaster-like sensation as riders dip, climb, and weave through some of the highest and most dramatic terrain on the Skunk Train's historic line, including a trip through the 1,100-foot Summit Tunnel. The Railcoaster features petal-powered Railbikes built with proprietary electric-assist technology, making the adventure accessible to a wide range of riders.

Guests are not required to pedal continuously, allowing them to set their own pace. This is unlike any other Railbike experience in the world!

The Skunk Train Launches Its Next Presidential Class Experience: The Noyo

Early summer marks the arrival of the Noyo, a newly introduced railcar experience delivering Presidential Class service. Designed as an intimate cocktail lounge, the Noyo captures that era's elegance with a menu featuring classic cocktails and a beautiful aesthetic. For the First Time, Skunk Train Welcomes Flynn Creek Circus to the Redwoods

Beyond spring and summer, the Skunk Train is preparing for a historic first. From September 11 through September 27, 2026, the Flynn Creek Circus and the Skunk Train have teamed up to create a truly unusual experience. Guests will have the opportunity to attend the circus deep in Noyo River Canyon's redwood forest, only accessible by a ride aboard the Skunk Train.

World-class acrobats and aerialists to a secluded redwood forest setting, Flynn Creek Circus performances blend daring physical movement, storytelling, and artistry. Guests will ride the train to a hidden performance site where the forest itself becomes part of the show---creating an intimate, immersive, and surreal experience. Concessions, beverages, and exclusive merchandise will be available for purchase.

Wolf Tree Turn

Willits signature scenic 16-mile, 2-hour, journey over the highest point of our line to the majestic Wolf Tree, departing seasonally from Willits is also available starting Saturday, April 18.

The Skunk Train's story begins in 1885, when it was established as the Fort Bragg Railroad primarily to haul massive redwood logs from the forests to mills on the coast. What started as a logging lifeline soon evolved into a passenger service, with the full 40-mile route connecting Fort Bragg to Willits completed in 1911.

The "Skunk" nickname originated in 1925 with the introduction of self-propelled motorcars, or railbuses, powered by gasoline engines and heated oil stoves. Their distinctive odor led locals to quip that "you could smell them before you could see them," much like a skunk.

At the heart of the Willits experience is the depot itself, built in 1916 in a charming Tyrolean Alps-style using premium clear redwood lumber. Today Willits is also marked by the striking Willits Arch, originally from Reno, Nevada, which was donated in 1995 and rebranded with local slogans: "Gateway to the Redwoods" and "Heart of Mendocino County."

Departing from Willits Depot, the flagship excursion is the Wolf Tree Turn, a scenic ride that showcases the rugged beauty of the Mendocino Redwoods. You'll climb a steep 3.5% grade to the Summit at 1,750 feet-the highest point on the line-before descending through Tunnel #2 and stopping at Crowley, enjoy picnic areas, hiking trails, and in fall, a pumpkin patch where you can pick your own gourd amid treats and drinks on board.

The Crookedest Railroad : With 381 curves over 40 miles and the longest straight section under a mile, the Skunk Train is dubbed the "crookest railroad in the west" and possibly the world. One section winds 8.5 miles to cover just 1.5 miles!

The Wolf Tree: A highlight is this ancient redwood, scarred by lightening strikes, which has led to unusual branch growth unlike its neighbors.

Stop 1: Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree-Leggett, CA

Start your journey heading north on Hwy 101 to Leggett, home of the famous Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree. This massive coast redwood stands 276 feet tall and features a 6-foot-wide tunnel carved through its base-just wide enough for most cars to pass through. The surrounding park includes quiet trails, a duck pond and a gift shop.

Hours: 8:30 AM to dusk (weather permitting).

Stop 2: Confusion Hill- Piercy, CA

Distance from Leggett- 5 miles

A short drive brings you to Confusion Hill, a classic roadside attraction filled with quirky fun. Explore the Gravity House, where optical illusions make it feel like gravity has gone sideways, and hop aboard the Mountain Train Ride, a scenic journey through the redwoods via a unique switchback system.

Stop 3: Avenue of the Giants-Humboldt Redwoods State Park

Distance from Confusion Hill: 3 miles

Continue north and take the exit for the Avenue of the Giants - a 31 mile scenic alternate route to Highway 101 that winds through one of the world's most impressive redwood groves.

Recommended Highlights:

Humboldt Redwoods Visitor Center (Near Weott): Get maps, exhibits, and insights into these ancient trees.
Founders Grove: A peaceful, short trail featuring some of the tallest trees in the park, including the Founders Tree and the fallen Dyerville Giant.
Immortal Tree: This survivor of fire, logging, and flood is a testament to the redwoods' resilience.
Shrine Drive-Thru Tree (Myers Flat): A second, optional drive-thru tree on your route.

Stop 4: The Peg House-Leggett, CA

Distance from Avenue of the Giants (on return trip) - 35 miles, 45 minutes

In Willits you will still find a bit of magic at the Ridgewood Ranch - home of an American Thoroughbred racehorse, Seabiscuit who rose to fame during the Great Depression. There's something in the breeze that gently blows through the valley, in between the old oaks and even older redwoods that just brings the heart back to another time. A time when the nation in the depths of the depression was looking for a hero, someone to believe in, someone to put their heart into. They found that someone in a horse named Seabiscuit - an unlikely racehorse; too lazy, loved to eat and sleep unlike his competitors. Seabiscuit offered the nation a much-needed diversion and source of optimism during a challenging period in American history. His story deeply resonated with millions of people, making him more than just a racehorse; he became an icon of perseverance and triumph.

Ridgewood Ranch today is the home of the final resting place of Seabiscuit, a beautiful 5000 acre ranch nestled in the heart of Mendocino county. It is a thriving community housing many NGO’s not-for-profits, farmers, and magnificent redwoods thousands of years old. It is also home to the Seabiscuit Therapeutic Riding Center, an adaptive horsemanship program dedicated to teaching the skill of horsemanship to children and adults with disabilities, helping them to thrive in their daily lives. These programs keep the hope and optimism of the story of Seabiscuit alive and thriving in our community!

Summer is a time to get out and get doing, to reconnect with the great outdoors, yourself and your loved ones! To enjoy the long days of sunshine and warm evenings. The Inn at Baechtel Creek is located right in the middle of Mendocino County, hence Willits is known as the "Heart of Mendocino County!"

This summer come spend some days exploring this amazing diverse and beautiful county - where else can you see majestic Redwoods, the gorgeous Coast, Lakes, Rivers and America's Greenest Wine Region?

The EEL RIVER is a big summer favorite for locals and guests alike. It flows over 196 miles from its headwaters and is one of California's most dynamic rivers. Abundant swimming holes exist along the Mainstem and the Middle Fork, due east and just north of Willits. Seasonal kayaking can be arranged nearby from Dos Rios to Alderpoint.

Or take a ride on Mendocino County's most famous tourist attraction - the Skunk Train! A special train they are offering on certain dates is The Highball Express! As the train winds through the towering redwoods you can indulge in local sips and noshes, available for purchase. Then a stop at Crowley, giving you plenty of time to explore the grounds, soak in the outdoors and immerse yourself in nature. Head up to Brooktrails Golf Course for a round of golf in one of the most serene and beautiful golf courses around! They also have a large Disc Golf course and a clubhouse to stop and refresh yourself!

Welcome to Willits and the Inn At Baechtel Creek!

As many of our regular customers know, we just terminated our relationship with a franchise membership and have gone independent! We are now known as the Inn At Baechtel Creek, a unique creekside hotel in Willits, CA. This change will allow us to offer better pricing, better options for our guests and takes us back to our original roots! As part of this process, we have created a new website!

With our busy summer months coming soon, we are excited to bring you suggestions on what to do and see when you are in Willits and Mendocino County. We will make sure to highlight local events, things to do and places to see so that you will not miss any of the amazing aspects of our county.

Willits is known as the "Gateway to the Redwoods" and the "Heart of Mendocino County." This unique location allows for day trips to the north for the Avenue of the Giants, some of the largest and amazing Redwoods, to the South for many award -winning organic wineries which we encourage you to check out, to the west for the gorgeous Mendocino Coast! We have itineraries available at the front desk of some of our favorite day trips to these areas and will be happy to provide those to you. Don't miss a ride on the historic Skunk Train - packages are available on our website!
