48 Hours in Willits: The Perfect Low-Key Escape

Looking for a peaceful, refreshing getaway that doesn’t require fighting crowds or blowing your budget? Nestled in the heart of Mendocino County, Willits offers the ideal two-day escape—full of forest beauty, small-town charm, and just the right mix of adventure and relaxation. Whether you're a couple seeking calm or a solo traveler looking to reset, this 48-hour guide is your invitation to unwind.

Basecamp: Inn at Baechtel Creek, where comfort meets character in the redwood foothills.

Day One: Arrive, Explore, and Exhale

3:00 PM – Check-In at Inn at Baechtel Creek
Settle into your cozy room, take a deep breath, and let the pace of life slow down. Step outside to hear the creek, take a stroll through the garden, or sip something warm under the trees.

4:00 PM – Walk Downtown Willits
Explore our charming Main Street. Discover local boutiques, vintage shops, and colorful murals. Pop into Mazahar for unique clothing and gifts, or Re-Evolution for books and antiques.

6:00 PM – Dinner at a Local Favorite
Dine at La Siciliana for hearty Italian with homemade pasta, or head to Northspur Brewing for a relaxed atmosphere and craft brews.

8:00 PM – Stars & Stillness
Back at the inn, step outside. You’ll find skies filled with stars and a quiet you didn’t know you missed.

Day Two: Railroads, Redwoods & Riverbanks

8:00 AM – Breakfast in Town
Grab a latte and warm pastry from Brickhouse Coffee or an old-school diner breakfast at Lumberjacks.

9:30 AM – Ride the Skunk Train
Board the historic Skunk Train and travel through towering redwoods, over trestle bridges, and deep into Mendocino’s backcountry. It’s a scenic highlight not to be missed.

12:00 PM – Picnic at Recreation Grove Park
Pick up sandwiches from Roland’s Bakery & Bistro and enjoy a picnic in this peaceful green space right in town.

2:00 PM – Ridgewood Ranch or Local Hiking
Visit Ridgewood Ranch (home of the legendary racehorse Seabiscuit) or stretch your legs on the Brooktrails trails just outside town—gentle, wooded, and never crowded.

5:30 PM – Relax at the Inn
Soak in the peace of the creekside garden, nap with your window open, or read in your room’s quiet comfort.

7:00 PM – Sunset Dinner
Try local cuisine at The Broiler Steak House, a beloved Willits tradition since 1966.

Day Three: Slow Mornings & Farewell For Now

8:00 AM – Morning Walk & Coffee
Take a short stroll near the inn or return downtown for one last cup of locally roasted coffee.

10:00 AM – Check Out, Feeling Renewed
You’ll leave not only rested—but already planning your next trip back.
